It’s been a great summer flying season
with many scale events in the region.
The October meeting signals the
beginning of the 6 month long ‘Building
Season’ here in Minnesota. This is the
time of year that it’s become too cold,
windy, wet or just plain ugly to be
outside flying.
Long thought out projects are evolving
in Minnesota basements and garage shops
and will be discussed at our monthly
meetings.
The meeting was called to order by
President Calvin Branton. There were 31
members and guests in attendance.

There were many great scale
flying events in the region for 2019 including:
The
Toledo Show April 2019 |
- Dave
Andersen & Roy Maynard entered
his all electric ¼ scale Hawker
Hurricane in the Designer Scale
Competition. (See the March 2019
Newsletter for details)
|
 |

Batty entered his Bates P-51A in
the Warbird competition.
|
 |
Top Gun May 2019 |
-
Our Warbirds
& Classics Alliance Leader,
Chuck Hamilton competed with his
Ziroli SBD again this year sharing
his tent with Chris & Colin Mayer
campaigning Chris’ Top Flight GS
P-51D.
-
Chris says it
was a great adventure and he learned
a lot about what the judges want to
see during the flying competition.
-
Chris Jackson
from Ft Lauderdale compete with an
Andersen Design LA-7, hat tip to
Jon Bomers who was onsite for
the photos.

The Warbirds and Classics
Alliance
We had a
number events including our own
Northern Alliance Military Fly In.
We had many members travel and
participate in most of these events. |
-
June –
Warbirds & Classics over
Michigan - Grand Ledge,
Michigan, Nice grass
runways near Lansing Michigan.
It’s a great drive and a great
event. Take the ferry
across from Milwaukee for a
different view!
-
June -
Windy City Warbirds & Classics
- St. Charles, Illinois,
Fox Valley RC has a stunning
facility just southwest of
Chicago with a paved runway and
manicured grass. The local
members are terrific and help
you at every opportunity.
-
July –
Air Supremacy over Goshen -
Goshen, Indiana, This
event is held at the Goshen,
Indiana airport where the grass
runway has been rolled and
smoothed for our event. This
event is hosted by Chuck
Hamilton & RJ Monroe and the Air
Supremacy Production Company.
This is one of my personal
favorite events.
-
August –
Northern Alliance Military Fly
In – Owatonna, Minnesota,
NAMFI is arguably the oldest of
these events and hosted by
members of the Scale Flyers of
Minnesota and the Southern
Minnesota Model Aircraft Club of
Owatonna, Minnesota.
-
August –
Warbirds & Classics over the
Midwest – Fond Du Lac,
Wisconsin, This is
practically an extension of the
Owatonna event in that many of
the pilots attending Owatonna
finis h
Sunday and drive directly to
Fondy to start flying again on
Monday to provide nearly two
continuous weeks of Warbirds &
Classics flying and camaraderie!
The
Minnesota Embassy has grown to
be two 30’ x 40’ circus tents
holding over 16-32 pilots and
nearly 60 aircraft. The tents
have sides similar to the
Storage Tent so it minimizes
cramming our planes with many
others in that tent.
-
August –
Indiana Warbirds Campaign –
Muncie, Indiana, Usually
held over Labor Day Weekend this
is a coming home party to the
AMA Nats Flying field. Buy A
“Hoosier Daddy” t-shirt while
you’re there!
-
September –
Warbirds & Classics over the
Bluegrass – Rosewood,
Indiana, This is the
newest event of the Alliance on
a brand new club field with
paved runways on the northern
shore of the Ohio River. The
facilities are stellar and the
hospitality fantastic!
|
The Ankeny Jet & Warbird Airshow
This is an
extension of the Iowa Jets event
that had been previously held in
Ottumwa, Iowa. This event was held
near the Ankeny Airport on the old
Byron’s Originals “Striking Back”
site.

We’ve lost a couple of our prolific
builders and flyers ... |
Duane Dahnert:
Duane passed away early this summer
after celebrating his 96th Birthday. |
 |
 |
Pete
Stapleton: Pete
had been fighting cancer since the
loss of his wife last year and he
passed away late this summer.
|
|
|
David Andersen’s
Miles Messenger Design: |
Dave has been
working on the landing gear design to
get functional shocks/dampers into the
legs to minimize landing bounce.
|
Bob Swanson’s
1912 Blackburn Flyer |
Bob introduced us to his scratch built
Blackburn Flyer.
The wings
are designed
to be warped for roll and turning the
aircraft.
Bob is fighting an
illness and is looking for an interested
party to purchase the project from him
and fly it! |
|
Dennis Batty’s
Tiger Moth |
Dennis talked about
the revival of his DeHavilland Tiger
Moth. |
Scott Russel’s
F-14 Tomcat EDF |
Scott displayed his
F-14 with the swing wing mechanism and
discussed the function of the
interaction between the swing wing and
the deployment of the flaps.
He’s looking at
using a small turbine to replace the EDF. |
