Our March 2025 meeting hosted 27 members and guests!

Cal Branton started the meeting at 7:01 with one of his unique stories/jokes followed by an update on the status of the SMMAC Owatonna Airfield.

The runway had been damaged by the lack of snow protection and high winds.  The Petro-matte has been severely torn by the strong winds and will need to be replaced.  The plan is to obtain materials and rebuild the runway before the May 2025 flying season.

Dan Schmidt’s Hannover CL.III Project Update

Last December, Dan introduced us to his Hannover CL.III.  Dan told us that the 1917 Hannover CL-III started out life about 5 years ago built from old Cleveland plans.  Dan used the outlines (as the original was meant for rubber power).

It spans 55.5" and weighs 4lbs. 1oz.  Dan plans to use a pair of 3S 2200 “shorty” LiPo batteries in parallel (just behind the firewall) to get the CG and duration. He balanced the airframe using a “Vanessa Rig” which he found easy to use and very accurate.

Since last December, Dan has been patiently replicating the lozenge patterns and colors for the tops of the wings, bottoms of the wings, and the smaller patterns on the top/bottom of the horizontal tail surfaces.  The German 4-color scheme is a lot of lozenges, so Dan made stencils to replicate it with acrylic paints and an airbrush.  It has taken months and a lot of small acrylic paint bottles.  All details are hand-painted!

Dan says he’ll probably perform the maiden flight at 3M Field once the weather warms up!

Roy Maynard’s  1/6th Scale

ARMORTEK T-38 Jagdpanzer TANK Project

Roy shared a non-flying scale model of a German T-38 JagPanzer tank buster.  The full-size tank supported a HV 75mm cannon.

Over 2500 were built in Czech factories during WW2. The model is powered by (2) 12 batteries (in series) and weighs about 100#.

Roy had airbrushed the camouflage colors freehand using Tamiya paints. He still has to add details, clear-coat the model and then weather it for the final look.

Roy enlisted the help of 4 members to carry it from his van into the meeting.  This was the first time it had been run.  The Jagdpanzer is equipped with a good sound system for engine sounds as well as firing the cannon.

The cannon has remote slew and elevation movements as well as a very realistic scale recoil upon firing with an LED muzzle flash.  Roy also has installed a smoke system. (not demonstrated in the church)

Bring your Airplane and Tell us about it!

Scott Anderson’s Hobby King Lancaster Bomber

Scott shared his TCRC Auction find, a Hobby King Lancaster Bomber.

The Lancaster has (4) motor/ESC packages in the engine nacelles powered by a single 3S 2500 mAH LiPo strapped in the bomb bay.

The model is designed to be Hand-Launched and belly-landed. It looks like it should be fun!

Sherwood Heggen’s Black Horse Models FW-190

Sherwood shared his repair story of his friend’s Black Horse Models FW-190 from Motion RC.

Originally flown with a DLE-130 twin, the model was too much for the intermediate pilot and he had a hard landing that damaged the retractable gear mounts.

Sherwood repaired the structure, replacing the carbon/plywood mounting with a hardwood structure.

He then offered it for sale to the membership. A happy member loaded it into his van and took it home.

We look forward to seeing it fly!

Cal Branson’s FreeWing SR-71 EDF Project

Cal shared his FreeWing SR-71 Dual EDF model from Motion RC.

This is a big model (over 6 feet long) and looks terrific without the surface defects that many molded foam models have.  It is powered by (2) 70mm counter-rotating fans powered by (2) 6S 4500 mAH LiPo batteries.

YouTube Videos show that it looks great in the air and it had a deployable drogue parachute to slow it on landings.

We look forward to seeing it fly!

Gary Tschautscher’s P-51

Formation/Recognition Lights Project

Gary Has a 1/5th scale P-51D project that needed some additional detail so he researched the under-wing formation/recognition lights and how to incorporate them into his model.

The (3) lights are Red/Green/Amber but rather than painting them onto his wing, Gary created a CAD model and designed the scale housing to be mounted in the wing.  He not only printed the housing but also the color and clear lenses and the power system to illuminate them.

Gary also wanted to properly simulate the painted aluminum panels. The membership provided several alternatives using Krylon or Rustoleum rattle can paints
