March 2010

This was the last meeting of the season.  Scale Flyers of Minnesota meetings will resume in the fall!

At the last meeting ...
Rick Frane displayed some Fighter Aces 1/6th scale pilot figures.  Full-figure fighter and bomber pilots.  Lightweight versions available too.  Orders are custom, about $70 each. More information www.fighteraces.co.uk and  www.scaleaircrewsupplies.co.uk

Tim Johnson discussed some upcoming Owatonna events. Watts over Owatonna electric fly-in, July 30 & Aug 1., The Northern Alliance fly-in and Giant Scale Saturday's.  See our Metro Event Schedule on our website & SMMAC's website recently updated by Steve Mills

Cal Branton showed his Me 262 jet fighter.  Built by Dino DeGeorgio (a Top Gun regular) and rebuilt by Steve Mills.  Air World kit aus Germany is all glass with built-in panel lines and rivets. Twin turbines would be heavy at this size, so it is powered by two electric ducted fans with four 5000 MaH battery packs producing 8 ½ lbs thrust each. 120 mph.  Low thrust line requires full down-elevator on takeoff until full airspeed is reached.  Cal experienced an engine-out due to an overheated battery and again by a burned-out speed control, nearly causing a spin.  Without flaps, the glide is long and flat

Joe Niedemeir completed the Beech Staggerwing that he brought to the January meeting. He installed the cabin details and painted the ship with latex paint. He used the formula of 120 watts per pound to calculate engine size.  Result is slightly more than 5 lbs.  This is Joe’s first attempt at scale and scale design and latex paint.  It is an amazing accomplishment.

Most stayed awake while Dave Andersen rehearsed his Toledo Expo symposium talk on Giant Scale Design.  His superb PowerPoint slides were created by Jon Bomers.

Web-Guy Notes The Northwest is known for its rain and it's not uncommon to have your clubs flying field surrounded by trees that are taller than skyscrapers ...

While most everyone knows Boeing Aircraft is headquartered here, not as many know that there are 2 large unique museums in Seattle & Everett that have a wide verity of flyable historic aircraft. Boeing also has a restoration center in Everett that's unrelated to "The Flying Heritage Museum". There're also a number of unique private aircraft that pop-out during numerous summer Airshows. Can you say, Scale-Guy Heaven!

Both of the Museums above allow you to get right up to the aircraft but don't touch. Tape measures & cameras are OK too.
