Our last meeting of the 2025-2026 Building Season was well attended.

Our President, Cal Branton was recovering from surgery so he could not attend. Scott Anderson our Club Secretary was out of state, so Phil Zudiea and Larry Sorenson supplied the images and meeting notes. Thank you!

Roy Maynard’s ¼ Scale WWII SAAB J-21 Project

Roy brought in his nearly completed SAAB J-21 Fighter built using David P. Andersen plans.

Available free to you within this website, see Andersen Designs from the home page.

This is truly a massive model built with removable wings (at the tail-booms) to allow it to fit into Roy's (large) Sprinter Van for transport.

The Dave Andersen designed 1/4 scale electric Saab J21A model is powered by an Esprit motor with a 200-amp Jeti speed controller and 14S battery setup.  Custom Robart retracts lift to 7” main and 5” nose wheels.  An electronic sound system replicates Daimler Benz engines with two 4” speakers.

The model features Klass Kote paint in authentic Swedish WW2 colors, a semi-scale cockpit, and an Aces of Iron pilot bust.  It weighs just under 50 lbs, it’s scheduled to fly later this summer.

Chris Launer’s Ordinance Modeling

Chris Launer shared a new set of ordinance he had built for a client using his wonderful 3D printing capabilities.

He builds custom bombs, missiles, and other weaponry to his clients  specifications.

E. Ruan’s Custom Brewster Buffalo Landing Gear

Ernest has been building the Bates Buffalo for some time, but he has been stymied by the lack of available retracts by the recommended manufacture.  He has now started engineering his own set for the model project.

This is really the second attempt with Brewster retracts. The first time utilized two servos.  It worked but once the radio was turned off, the gear collapsed.

In this second attempt, Ernest plans to use Actuonix units.  In addition, he’s thinking about engineering a one piece from the two-piece shown on the plans.  The advantage will be keeping the whole retraction system connected during transportation.

We look forward to seeing the resulting product!

M. Danielson’s 1/6th scale Skymaster T-38A Talon

Mike shared his latest T-28 model with NASA livery.  Brandon Archer provided the custom painting services and mentioned that the NASA Logo on the tail required custom paint masks from Callie Graphics for the 5-layer paint.  It was challenging!

It has pneumatic landing gear, doors and speed brakes.  It has an anti-collision light in the tail and a position light on the bottom of the fuselage.

Mike decided to do this model after reading the book “Challenger” and realizing the uniqueness of astronauts’ use of these aircraft for training and as a means of traveling.

Mike plans to maiden it this spring at SMMAC, we look forward to a flight report this summer!

  • Skymaster T-38A Talon

  • Scale: 1:6

  • Length: 96" (2446mm)

  • Wingspan: 59' (1500mm)

  • Weight: 27.8lbs empty, 34.6lbs wet

  • Power: KingTech K130G5

  • Radio: Jeti CB220, CortexPro Gyro

  • Livery: NASA Crew (by Brandon Archer using Klass Kote paint, support from Roy Maynard)

Brandon Archer’s JTM F-16 Project

Brandon shared his 1/8.5 scale F-16 by JTM is powered by a Swiwin 80 turbine and features JP scale retracts, Torq servos, a Spektrum RX, and a CortexPro gyro.

He has completed six flights with this aircraft, two of which were flown without the AG63 Pro braking and steering gyro system which made it a challenge for ground handling and landing.

Future plans for the jet include adding lights and a scale cockpit and pilot from Jet Rulers 1/8 scale F-16.

45% ME-163 Komet Update:  Brandon also discussed the 45% Me-163 Komet’s 3D printed cockpit for Brian Omara’s 2nd Komet build.

Jan Larsen has generated CAD files that need final tweaking before starting the printing of this very large cockpit and pilot figure.

Ahmed Bassal’s ¼ Scale Me-163 Komet Motor Glider

Ahmed shared his latest Komet creation, the ¼ Scale Me-163 powered by an electrical system!  The system consists of a badass motor 5340-360Kv brushless motor driving a 17x8 carbon fiber folding prop.  The combination produce 21 pounds of thrust using an 8 S Lipo battery of 9200mah capacity.  The total weight is approximately 17 lbs.

The colorful paint scheme is taken from a story in “Beyond the Sprues”, an on-line modeling forum where the author (unknown) tells a story about using the Me-163K (Katapult) to defend German shipping from Allied raiders.  The story describes the Komet’s being fitted with RATO engines for the catapult launch and the recovery system where the spent, unpowered Komet is recovered by the pilot snagging a loop of cable on the ship on landing. (Only one shot at this!)

The white paint scheme with blue & yellow lightning bolts is a perfect way to accessorize Ahmed’s electrically powered Me-163 motor glider.

We expect to get a flight report once the weather warms up!

This was our LAST meeting until October 30, 2026. Enjoy Flying Season!

We look forward to seeing you all during this flying season!  I have referenced a link to the many flying events our members attend! Please review it and feel free join US!
